Companies have promoted diversity and inclusion for years. However, African Americans, LatinX, and Native Americans only make up 5.3% of the tech industry. That disparity further shows itself when you look at women only making up 20% of tech professionals. These statistics are not indicative of the population. It clearly shows that we have a problem and a lot of room for growth.

That growth will come when we work together and invest in our office and community. Our mission with United, an employee resource group at Verizon Media, is to invest in minorities internally and throughout the community. We truly believe that together we are stronger.

Investment looks like a variety of things to us, from increasing cultural awareness in an effort to break down barriers to highlighting career opportunities within the tech industry. Our initiatives support internal groups as much as they support the community we live in. Ultimately, we want to get more people from different minority groups in tech at all levels from the front line to leadership.

Our work doesn’t stop here! Every day we come to Verizon Media in an effort to unite our community through our workplace. Learn more about our story and on-going work at verizonmedia.com.

IMPACT OF UNITED ERG

The United ERG is dedicated to investing in minorities internally at Verizon Media and throughout the community. This is a look at the events United ERG has kickstarted or sponsors in Omaha and around the country.

Tech Week in Anadarko, Oklahoma

The NASV’s 2+2+2 Accelerator Technology Pipeline is a six-year program for high school juniors from various tribes who are interested in pursuing a technical degree and career. During their time in the program, they will be engaged in apprenticeships, internships and coop opportunities.

One of the primary goals of this program is to increase the number of Native Americans working in technical roles. In addition, the program will help economically develop the local economy and provide skilled labor for corporate opportunities in the technical fields.

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

The office was treated to a traditional Chinese fashion show, a calligraphy station, dance performances, and a Tai Chi demonstration. United ERG took it a step further and donated to Nebraska Chinese association.
